Lumsden Elementary School Addition and Renovation
This 20,000sqft building addition consists of a new school gymnasium with storage space and washrooms as well as a mechanical mezzanine to house equipment to replace the existing system in the school. A grand entrance was created with a reading stage, offices and kitchen. Along the North side of the school a 4,500 daycare centre was constructed with full kitchen, laundry, washrooms and playrooms.
The building is constructed with conventional steel, masonry, and wood frame combinations. The mezzanine is a concrete deck over metal decking and structural steel.
The exterior building finishes are a combination of metal cladding, brick and stucco. The interior 10,000sqft renovation included all new finishes with custom millwork throughout.
A unique challenge of the project was to demolish the center 5,000sqft of the school, separating it into 2 areas in order to construct the grand entrance, while working alongside the staff and students to ensure safety of all involved and minimize interruptions to daily activities.
